EN:
Who? Sara Vanderhoydonck
Where? Belgium, Flanders
How many? 24 years old
What? Until July 2011 I’ll be living in Brioude as an EVS volunteer. I’ll be working together with Musikado, Café Lecture, Festival d'Aquarelle, centre des loisirs à Fontannes, …

FR :
Pourquoi?

ENG :
Why? I first started looking for an EVS project in the last year of my studies in 2009. I didn’t want to work yet, was tired of being a student and didn’t had the money to travel. So why not do some volunteering with EVS in France, England or maybe Chile?

But eventually things went differently. I spend the next year working in Belgium and travelling through South-America.

Last summer I arrived back in Belgium and started working interim. That’s when I received an e-mail: ‘due to cancelation, urgent need of new EVS volunteer in Brioude with Belgian nationality’. One month later I arrived in Brioude!

FR:

What have I been doing? I’ve been in France for 3 weeks now. In Brioude I’ve met a lot of people, saw a lot of snow and worked at the Café Lecture.

FR:

I've also been to the EVS arrival seminar in Sommières. Where I've seen the sun and other European volunteers. We discussed EVS, our projects, the cultural differences and learned French slang, …

FR:

On the way back, while waiting for our trains, we had the chance to visit Nîmes.

ENG: I've never seen a comparable thing! A great atmosphere created by awesome lightart! Last saturday morning I got off the train and entered in a world which I really miss. The feeling of a big city, the energie, kultures and odors!
With a friend I went to Lyon to visit "La Fete des Lumieres". We visited the centre and in the evening we met friends...and their friends so that we were like almost 15 people from very different countries (like always) in the colourfull illuminated streets which were full of people. The night was very cold but furtunately there were poeple selling hot wine like every ten meter. Afterward they took us to a boat-disco on the river (Rohne) which crosses Lyon. Without having had some sleep we went back to Brioude in the morning... Lyon is an awesome city! Perfect for spending time in and to do some studies... I can really recommend the city and "La Fete de la Lumiere"!

Chez moi

EN: There is no other place like home. Sometimes we want to escape, but there is always a time when we want to come back. Sooner or later. My grandmother, who was born and grew up in south of Russia even after living in Lithuania for more than 40 years always says that it is good here, but it is not her home and it will never be. And I think I know what she means. And for me, it is good to be home, even though I already miss Brioude and all the people i met there!
When I look back over these 10 months I spent in France I am so happy to have had this chance to experience so many new things, developing, making new friendships, seeing, exploring, learning.
Seriously, THANK YOU! :)

EN: Here I will upload my Thank You, Cafe-Lecture video from photos and video that I took during 1o months.

EN: And I want to share some pictures from my last visit in decemberly Paris, just before I had this adventurous trip home, thanks to the storming weather and too heavy luggage, which was lost in the end, but found his way home after few days.

EN: I say goodbye to my EVS project and wish all the best to the ones who will continue. It is a great great part of life!

Profitez bien!

Have a wonderful holiday! Nice, cozy, calm or loud, relaxing or intriguing, worth to remember time!

With love before Christmas, :)

ENG: On Friday evening Sara, the new vonlunteer has arrived and I have left for a concert in Clermont Farrand. I know it was not very polite but... We saw "The Ex" live on stage! It was awesome... as well like the bar (Bar Raymond) they played in! We spent the night upstairs in one of the rooms above the bar and left the next morning to Brioude to prepare for the party previewed for the evening. The party of Neringa (departure) for Sara (arrival)!:)

ENG: At 8 p.m. the first visitors have arrived. Everyone was supposed to bring something to drink, so that we had too much in the end. Therefore some people ran arround quite drunk. Fortunately we had prepared a lot of food for the party to neutralize the degrees. There were nearly 40-50 people arround here who celebrated, danced, drank, ate, watched striptise, sang and laughed. Nothing was missing:)
The next morning I woke up on a couch in the living room with a strooong headache looking at the chaos... Fred was a bit angry about it which I can realy understand. I think the wooden floor was quite drunk as well that night concidering the wine and beer spots on it...

When the good things go bad and bad things go good.

EN: After intensive week of preparation for my photo exhibition i felt like having a pause of relaxation. And just by chance Mehidi (new arrival in Brioude) proposed us to go with him in south of France to stay in his mothers house and visit the Provence region. Sounded good enough to me and so I went. I and three boys including Thomas. And from the very beginning of the trip it gave some bad signs to be too complicated for relaxation holidays. Damn I really hate Facebook, no matter how convenient sometimes it is but during holidays it should be forbidden. It is a sad truth that third part of the day Medi and Axel spent on facebook.
However I shouldn't be too negative, we did went out and saw some breathtaking views, but again we went out too late and in 30min the spectacular views were sunk in the darkness of the night.
We visited Marseille, it was great. We met some other volunteers, had amazing dinner and went out to the Irish pub. In my big disappointment without an irish music, but world wide known pop hits.
In the end of the trip me and Thomas had a big lava field of misunderstandings which was not at all pleasant way to end the holidays. But the moment I entered my home at Brioude things seemed to be coming back to their places, had a long talk with Thomas, cleared up everything which was misunderstood and that shows clearly that cup of warm tea and calm clear conversation is the way to set things right. And there is nothing wrong to have some things go wrong because that is always an experience and the way to learn and develop.
Caves and ruins.
Soft, deep, green, thick.

Almost like a red canyon.

Photo exposition!

FR: Enfin.

Finally I did it. My very first photo exhibition. It is there, still hanging in Artotek and Cafe lecture. It is very strange to see your pictures hanging around just like that, in big formats, covering white walls. Night before exhibition when we finished cutting and gluing photos on carton boards and hung them I stood aside, took a deep breath and thought about these 10 months that i spent here in France and all these people I met and portraits i did on rainy and sunny days, in flower or ray fields, in different towns, in different houses, spontaneously or well planed. It has been great time. I really feel thankful to all these people that I met and chances that I had to make my exhibition real.

EN: During vernissage - presentation of my exhibition I felt so blessed despite being stressed :) by seeing cafe lecture full of people who were there for discussing, analyzing or just observing photos. Some were dragging my sleeve to ask or show what they saw in pictures and it was great, so many different approaches and opinions. The pictures spoke to people and that was my goal.

Once again, Thank You and lets keep on moving.
Hopefully to another exhibition!

Second home

EN: Cafe-Lecture is like my second home. I love opening it, entering, turning on the lights, the smell of coffee. And especially now, when it is cold and rainy outside it is the place to be cozy and warm.
Some weeks ago i organised the photo evening, where everyone could come and have a picture taken of him, like in a real studio! The people who come to cafe are really interesting personalities and i was really happy to have the possibility to reveal it in my pictures. Was fun time!

Also, not so long ago Medi - who you see in the 4th picture organised the karaoke evening where me and Thomas performed. He was one of the blues brothers and i was Marilyn Monroe (I know, what they were thinking about..). But Thomas had a really great dance!
You can see it in the little video I made. Go Go Go :)
